JIU-JITSU

Kid’s Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Jiu-Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, taking the fight to the ground.

Our program places a strong emphasis in physical, mental, and spiritual development for the purposes of self-defense and personal growth. In addition, we have an advance training program that hones the sport side of Jiu-Jitsu to prepare you for competition.

Whether you’re looking for self-defense, sport training, and or just a bit more confidence and self-esteem for your child, the kid’s Jiu-Jitsu program is a great place to start.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE FIRST DAY

Many children (and some adults too!) may feel very reserved, nervous, and shy on their first day, as is the case with many new activities. There will be many new movements and positions that are completely foreign to them. It is completely natural to feel timid, but after a few minutes of instruction, participants are encouraged by the supportive environment and tend to relax. Our goal at the beginning of class is to make the warm-ups fast-paced and fun. We encourage every child join in, with or without the uniform, to get a feel for the class. Some children prefer to watch at first, which they are welcome to do. We do not require sparring or competition in the class, but most kids look forward to trying their new techniques. We end each class with fun, cooperative games, which are always a hit with the kids.

WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit. It prides itself in being known as the “gentle art”, allowing a smaller, weaker person to use leverage and submissions (chokes, locks) to defend himself against a bigger opponent. With origins in Judo (Newaza) and Japanese Jujutsu, it has since been adapted and modified to become the martial art it is today.

The popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has been on a steady rise over the years, thanks to the growing audience of MMA. Typical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu jargon such as “rear naked choke”, “armbar” and “guard” have even become common vocabulary even among non-practitioners.

WHAT IS KICKBOXING

We make exercise, hard work, and learning fun!  “Kickboxing” is an integration of Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai and has applications for self-defense, competition, and functional fitness.  Kids will learn and develop their stance, footwork, and basic stand-up techniques.  This class teaches punches, elbows, knees, kicks, and defense techniques.

The 60 minute class will strengthen and condition both the bodies and minds of the students.  Students will learn how to move and control their bodies, increase strength and fitness, and improve coordination and athleticism.  They will also learn when it is appropriate to use Kickboxing techniques, how to practice self-control and respect, and to work as a cooperative team member.  These skills will not only improve students quality of life, but can enhance performance in other sports and activities.
